Beara GAA Notes
FOLLOWING a wait of twelve years, Bere Island are again Beara Junior 2 football champions after their victory over Garnish in the final, which was played at Castletownbere on Sunday last.
It was all-square at the interval, with the scores: Garnish 2-1, Bere Island 1-4. The Garnish goals came from Paudie O’Neill and Kevin Murphy with the Bere Island goal scored by David Elphic.
In the second half, Garnish – playing with the wind — soon took the lead with two good points and things didn’t look too good for the islanders •at that stage. However, when the need was greatest, Bere Island produced their best football and soon regained the lead.
The crucial score with nine minutes remaining when Michael Crowley struck for the all-important goal, which ensured victory for the island with the final score: Bere Island 2-10, Garnish 2-5. As the trophy made its way across the sea to the island bonfires were blazing on the shores of Bere Island to welcome back their heroes.
In the county under-16 football championship, Adrigole defeated Croke Rovers by 4-10 to 2-5. Glengarriff defeated St. Mary’s by nine points to win the South West under 12 league.
Castletownbere lost to Ardfield by two points in the under 12 section final. Glengarriff defeated Tuosist in the Beara under 12 shield and, in the Beara under 12 plate final, Garnish defeated Adrigole.
This weekend Castletownbere meet Garnish in the semi-final of the Donal Harrington Trophy competition at Adrigole.
