Glengarriff representing division in championship

Glengarriff will be representing the Beara Division in the county junior B football championship as a result of their win over Bere Island at Adrigole Park last Saturday. The Beara section of the competition isn't over yet, but the Glen and the Island are the only two real junior B clubs in the division, though the other clubs also field second teams.

Points from Peter Murphy, free, and Paul Connolly, after a fine upfield run by Brian Murphy, got Glengarriff off to a flying start, but they were rocked by a Gary Hilliard goal for Bere Island in the 12th minute. However, the Glen counterattacked and their very promising speedy wing forward Mikie O'Sullivan, still only a minor, soloed through to crash the ball to the Island net within a minute.

Owen Clarke followed with a Glen point to which Jim Hanley replied with a pointed Island free. Points followed for the Glen from Christy O'Sullivan and Peter Murphy, 2 from frees. Jim Hanley pointed two Bere Island frees, but before half time Kevin O'Sullivan, another strong minor, and Owen Clarke had two further points for Glengarriff to leave their side leading by 1-8 to 1-3. In this half the Island gave as good as they got, with Brendan Murphy and Mike (Seer) O'Sullivan in defence, the two midfielders, and a lively enough forward line keeping the Glen at full stretch. Glengarriff, apart from Brian Murphy in particular in defence, and a few of the forwards, did not play to their full potential in the opening half.

The killer blow to Bere Island's hopes came soon after the resumption when a high Glengarriff ball came back off the upright and the vigilant Glen full forward Peter Murphy crashed the rebound to the net. Paul Connolly, who also had a good game despite his fairly recent broken collar bone injury, and Peter Murphy tacked on two further Glengarriff points as the two O'Sullivans, Kevin and Christy, were really coming into their own at centrefield. Jim Hanley, who was battling hard hereabouts, pointed a Bere Island free, but Paul Connolly, free, and Peter Murphy (2) added points for the Glen.

A spirited run upfield saw wing half back Mike (Seer) O'Sullivan lift Bere Island hearts with a fine point, but this was nullified shortly afterwards when another devastating run by Mikie O'Sullivan saw the speedy wing forward send over an equally fine Glengarriff point from far out. Bere Island fought back for two pointed frees from Jim Hanley. Glen corner forward Paul Connolly had the final score, a point from a free, to leave his team winners by 2-15 to 1-7. There were two other impressive things about the Glen. One was the great distance their goalie Vivian Downey got into his kicks-out. The other was the promise shown by another of their minors, corner back John Galvin. Even though playing on Barry Murphy, still one of the liveliest of the Bere Island forwards (and fair dues to Barry he played his heart out), John stuck to his task with very tight marking from start to finish and showed that, with more experience, he will be a difficult man to round.

Glengarriff: Vivian Downey, John Galvin, Martin O'Sullivan, Kieran O'Shea, Noel Hurley, Brian Murphy, Pat Power, Christy O'Sullivan, Kevin O'Sullivan, Mikie O'Sullivan, Donal O'Sullivan, Owen Clarke, Kieran O'Shea (Reenmeen), Peter Murphy, and Paul Connolly. Subs: Gerard Harrington, Dave Power, and David O'Sullivan.

Bere Island: Brendan Crowley, Johnny (Jack) Harrington, Denis Crowley, Frank Hanley, Mike (Seer) O'Sullivan, Brendan Murphy, Gary Moriarty, Jim Hanley, Robbie Hilliard, David Elphick, Gary Hilliard, Mike Crowley, Mike Orpen, John Mullins, and Barry Murphy. Subs, Cormac Sidley and Derek Harrington.

Referee Micheal D. O'Sullivan (Adrigole) did an excellent job and his task was made relatively easy by two very sporting teams.

Bere Island put up by far and away their best performance this year with a 0-14 to 0-6 win over Garnish in the island. By all accounts, quite a lot of their scores were right out of the top drawer.

Jim Hanley is a big addition to them at centrefield. When they are eventually at full strength, it should be a cracker between themselves and Glengarriff in the championship. The Bere Island team was Brendan Crowley, Johnny (Jack) Harrington, Denis Crowley, Frank Hanley, Maurice O'Sullivan, Brendan Murphy, Gary Moriarty, Jim Hanley (0-4), Mike Orpen, David Elphick (0-2), Gary Hilliard (0-3), Michael Crowley (0-2), Sean O'Leary, John Mullins (0-3), and Tom Walsh.

Garnish: Aidan Harrington, Stephen O'Sullivan, Joe Lowney, Martin O'Sullivan, Fergus O'Driscoll, Mark O'Sullivan, Eanna O'Sullivan, Fintan O'Sullivan (0-2), Brian Walsh (0-2), Martin T. O'Sullivan, Donncha Lowney (0-2), Niall O'Connor, Finbarr Harrington, Paul O'Shea, and Damien E. O'Sullivan.

Referee, John Murphy, Castletownbere.
