Junior 2 title for Adrigole
Replay: Adrigole 2-9, Bere Island 1-8
LAST Sunday, the Beara junior 2 football final replay was hosted at Berehaven Park, Castletownbere.
In what was a rip-roaring contest, Adrigole came out on top after an exhilarating 140 minutes of play. In the drawn encounter, the score was Adrigole 2-12, Bere Island 3-9, and the large crowd gathered were expecting a similar feast of football.
Bere Island, playing with a strong breeze, started the game brightly and courtesy of some well-taken David Elphick frees raced into a two-point lead after ten minutes. With Cormac Sidley and Jim Hanley on top in midfield, Adrigole looked in some trouble early on. Bere Island added on three more points from the boots of Cian Harrington, Robbie Hilliard and Cormac Sidley to lead by five points. However, Adrigole staged a mini-revival with a Brian Blake point and two excellent points from Fergus Carey before David Elphick responded for the Island to leave the half-time score Bere Island 0-6, Adrigole 0-3.
Adrigole started the second half brightly and cut the deficit to a single point with some welltaken frees from Eoin O’Sullivan Greene and John Joe O’Sullivan. Bere Island stemmed the Adrigole comeback when a speculative delivery from Jim Hanley was punched to the back of the Adrigole net by Cormac Sidley. From the resulting kickout, Adrigole moved the ball down the field and were awarded a penalty after Damian O’Sullivan Greene was upended in the box. The resultant effort from Fergus Carey was well saved by Bere Island netminder Derek Harrington.
The game was now end to end and excellent match referee Timmy Murnane had to keep matters under control on a number of occasions. Fergus Carey and Jim Hanley exchanged frees to leave the score 1-7 to 0-6 to Bere Island with a quarter to play.
With some excellent performances from Sean Joe O’Sullivan, John O’Shea and Stephen O’Sullivan in the Adrigole defence and John Joe O’Sullivan in midfield, Adrigole were now gaining the upper hand and up front, Fergus Carey atoned for his earlier penalty miss with an excellent point. Adrigole lost the services of the excellent Joseph Downing to injury and introduced Timmy Lynch.
In a rip-roaring final ten minutes, Timmy Lynch became the toast of Adrigole when he turned the game. Soon after being brought on, he found himself in plenty of space and rifled to the Bere Island net to tie the contest. A John O’Sullivan point from play and an exquisite point from Carey sent Adrigole into a two-point lead. The score of the game from William O’Sullivan for the Island cut the deficit to one entering injury time before Timmy Lynch beat the Bere Island keeper and squared the ball for Eoin O’Sullivan, who stuck the ball into an empty net. This proved to be the last action of an absorbing game and left the final score Adrigole 2-9, Bere Island 1-8.
Secretary of the Beara board, John Murphy, presented the Donal Jim O’Sullivan Memorial Cup to deserving captain Fergus Carey amid great celebrations.
